Our latest research report dives deep into Chile’s remarkable economic trajectory, exploring how two decades of deliberate export diversification built a resilient foundation capable of weathering profound political transitions.
In our newly published study, Chile’s Quiet Build: How Two Decades of Export Diversification Carried Through to the Kast Era, we move beyond the turbulent headlines of the 2019 social upheavals and failed constitutional conventions. Instead, we examine the quiet, structural engine driving the country’s economy. According to the study’s analysis of Q1+ 2026 data, the narrative of Chilean economic fragility overlooks a massive expansion in non-traditional exports. Excluding copper and lithium, these exports are now running at an annualized rate of roughly $57 billion.
But the “so what?” goes far beyond aggregate numbers. Our research uncovers how specific capability-deepening sectors are redefining Chile’s global trade profile. We found staggering growth in maintenance and repair services (up over 223%), ICT services (+64%), and manufacturing (+58.2%). These aren’t accidental market emergences; the report traces them back to deliberate institutional policies, from post-1985 capital-account openings to the Central Bank’s inflation-targeting framework. By analyzing the transition from the Boric to the Kast administration, the study reveals how macro-credibility infrastructure remained intact, allowing the new government to inherit a diversified, thriving export ecosystem rather than starting from scratch.
